Top Cartoons: Black Hula

Here’s a short that I first saw on MTV’s animation variety show, Liquid Television. It wasn’t difficult to understand, even as a twelve-year-old, as its symbolism is pretty obvious. Still, its bold imagery, sobering message, and eerily peaceful soundtrack combine to create something remarkable. I love the “invader” concept, and the use of music to evoke the passage of time on an astronomical level. It only made me shrug as a twelve-year-old, but now it leaves me pensive and heartbroken, and that makes it one of my top cartoons ever.
